About Oakland International Airport
The 14th largest cargo airport in world, handling over 600,000 metric
tons in 2002, the Oakland International Airport supports a 24-hour-a-day
cargo business environment. The year of 2002 marked the 75th
anniversary of Oakland International Airport. From the early
years of gas-propelled balloons to present-day plans for terminal
expansion, Oakland International Airport has remained a vital
and innovative force in aviation.
Oakland International Airport – History
The invention of the airplane early in the 20th century made air
travel a practical reality. It was during these years that Oakland,
a city with a distinguished aeronautical heritage, established
one of the country's busiest and best-known airports. Following
the 1918 Armistice, air commerce gained momentum and Oakland
retained its position as one of the leading western aviation
centers. During 1920's, mail and passenger service increased,
and dozens of new airports were built across the US. Continuing
its 79th year tradition of aviation excellence, Oakland Airport
will maintain its contribution to the region, providing for a
healthy economic climate.
